There are many fun new trends in the beauty industry, but you should do your research before diving in. Everyone should be protective of their eyes, especially if you suffer from dry eye, look before you leap into a new beauty trend. The $500 billion-dollar global beauty industry has new products hitting the market every day. But not every new item is as good for your eyes as you might want it to be. It is important to be aware of the possible pit falls of new beauty trends.

It might come as a surprise to you that something applied topically would expire, but expired makeup is one of the biggest culprits for serious eye infections. Using makeup that is more than three months old poses the threat of growing bacteria and fungus, which can lead to eye infections, irritated skin and even swelling around the eyes.

We’ve all seen the permanent makeup trends: microblading, lip tattoos and many more. One of today’s more popular practices is eyeliner tattoos. These are not only extremely dangerous but, if done incorrectly, they can cause permanent injury. If the ink in the tattoo is old or not injected in the right place, it can lead to retinal detachment, infection or permanent damage to the cells in the eye. Eyeliner tattoos are not reversible and should be avoided.

Other common cosmetic procedures, such as lash extensions and lash lifts can cause extreme skin irritation and are not recommended for people who have sensitive skin. If you do have sensitive skin and a history of dry eye, allergies or eye sensitivities, there is a possibility you might be more prone to skin irritation due to the chemicals in the solution.

If you are considering participating in one of the beauty industries newest trends, consult with Dr. Williams to see what concerns may exist. Ask if using the product or procedure will aggravate your dry eye syndrome or present other problems for you. Beauty is desirable, but it’s not worth risking your vision.
